There are more options than people realise, and they are not equally private. Here is what each one actually asks of you.
Most advice on this jumps straight to therapy, which is useful and also not what you need at eleven at night when something is sitting on your chest. The realistic choices divide by one question: what does this place want from you before it will listen.
Two questions sort this quickly. Do I want a reply, or do I just want it out? And would I mind if this were still readable in five years?
If you want a reply, a forum or a helpline is right. If you just want it out of your head, and you would mind it lasting, you want somewhere anonymous and temporary. Those are different needs and most people try to solve the second one in a place built for the first.
This is the part that gets skipped. When a thing you write is going to persist, you write a slightly managed version of it. You soften the ugly line. You leave out the bit that makes you look bad. That editing is exactly the part that stops it working, because the sentence you did not write is usually the one that needed saying.
Somewhere temporary removes the reason to manage it. That is the whole idea behind drift: you write the honest version precisely because it is not going to sit there.
It is, provided the place you choose does not ask for an account and does not tie what you write to anything identifying. Avoid including names, addresses, workplaces or anything that could locate you, and prefer somewhere that does not keep what you write indefinitely.
Putting a feeling into a sentence generally helps, because a vague heavy thing becomes a specific thing with edges. It goes wrong when venting becomes the only thing you do with a problem that needs an actual decision, or when the audience makes you perform rather than be honest.
Anywhere with no account and no profile. The risk on social platforms is not strangers, it is the people already connected to you. An anonymous space removes that, because there is nothing linking the words back to you in the first place.
Just need it out of your head? Put it down here.
